Diesel generator sets – used for either prime or backup (emergency) power – must be regularly maintained to ensure they provide quality power throughout their service life. Larger companies who own many generators, or those who rely on gensets extensively for prime power, may require an in-house engineer to maintain their gensets.
Smaller companies, or users who own a generator to provide backup power in the event of an outage, may establish maintenance contracts with generator dealers and/or electrical contractors to maintain their gensets.
These are what they learned:
Module 1: General description of generators
- Basic operation of generators
- Main components of generators: motor, alternator, etc.
- Speed and frequency
- Main systems: air, fuel, oil and water for cooling
Module 2: How to start and stop a generator
- Parameters to check before starting a generator
- Start procedure
- Parameters to check after starting a generator
- Stop procedure
Module 3: Control Board
- Most common control boards
- How to read and navigate control boards
Module 4: Most frequent problems with generators.
- Discharged battery
- Over-heating
- Unbalanced phases
- Old fue
Module 5: Safety measures & Maintenance
- Safety measures
- Importance of cleanliness
- Maintenance (change oil, fuel and air filters, and oil)
Module 6: Logging (Report)
- Importance of logging
- Daily logging
- Logging every 250 operating hours
